Minnesota Government Shutdown 2011

Information On The 2011 State Of MN Government Shutdown

From July 1 2011 to July 20, 2011 the State Of Minnesota government shutdown for all non-essential workers and services until a new budget was agreed to by the MN State Legislature and Governor Mark Dayton.  The new budget will keep Minnesota running until July 2013.  The Minnesota State Legislature has sent Governor Mark Dayton all the bills that could comprise the new budget but they were vetoed.  Unable to reach a new agreement the Minnesota State Shutdown became a reality on July 1 2011.   The Governor wants to raise taxes while the Republican Legislature is holding fast to their principles not to raise taxes on Minnesotans during a recession.  With many of their citizens already unemployed and unable to pay their credit cards, mortgages and other bills, the Minnesota economy will be adversely affected by a shutdown as many employees of the state are laid off.

Reactivate Minnesota Unemployment Benefits

Only essential employees will remain on the job.  Others can receive Minnesota unemployment benefits while laid off.   Exactly who is an essential employee is to be determined by the courts, but you can bet Police and Fire will be included.  What is likely to close?  Based on past budget fights that cause a Minnesota shutdown we'll see state parks closed, rest areas and of course some government service offices.  While this will be inconvenient you can prepare for the shutdown by taking care of your business prior to July 1, 2011.  If you are reading this now, you may want to just sit back and watch the show, its too late.
